Think Igor Stravinsky meets Sigur Ros — if these two musical forces could start a band together, the sound would bear a striking, sonic resemblance to the work of chamber music mavericks, CORDIS. Fusing an original combination of custom-made and traditional, ethnic instruments to create their signature sound for nearly a decade, this sparkling distortion of progressive chamber music is defined by the sound of electric cimbalomist (and founder/composer) Richard Grimes, multi-percussionist Andrew Beall, electro-acoustic cellist Jeremy Harman and pianist/keyboardist Dan Padgett. The Boston-based group borders on a gritty rock/punk aesthetic, but because the members were classically trained and steeped in chamber music, the resulting sound is not postured on loud and fast, but rather more developed and cerebral. CORDIS further crafts their sound by weaving the unlikely timbre of electric mbiras, modified typewriters, pitched wind tubes, 19th- century talking machines and the world’s longest-playing cylinder-driven music box into the mix.

Unplugged

Living Room cordis

cordis was first conceived in 2008 as an acoustic outfit. While the group has evolved into an amplified ensemble performing in larger venues, they remain true to their acoustic roots through a series of annual acoustic engagements referred to as their “Living Room” shows. As the title suggests, these intimate performances are specifically designed for smaller spaces. For cordis’ Living Room shows, the ensemble leaves all production and amplification out of the equation, performing exclusively on their acoustic instruments. In addition to their normal repertoire, these concerts also feature premieres of new cordis material, performances of unreleased original repertoire, and the work of outside composers who have been influential to the group.
